System constraints and contracts
We document what each system can and can't do: available interfaces, data formats, rate limits, and quirks. Middleware lives inside other systems' constraints, so the constraints get mapped before the architecture gets drawn.

Middleware architecture design
We design the layer that fits the job: transformation logic, queuing for volume spikes, retry and dead-letter handling, and state management. The architecture is chosen for the failure modes it prevents, not the diagram it makes.

Build with observability inside
Middleware fails invisibly by default, so observability is built into the code: structured logging, trace IDs across systems, and health endpoints. When something goes wrong at 2am, the logs already know where.

Load validation and handover
The layer gets validated at production volume and failure conditions before cutover, then documented and handed over with runbooks. Middleware succeeds by being forgettable, and reliability is what buys the amnesia.
