Sagard
Website design for a global multi-strategy alternative asset firm

Overview
Founded in Montreal in 2016, Sagard has grown to $46B in assets across venture capital, private equity, credit, real estate, and wealth. It includes Diagram, Portage Ventures, and Portage Capital Solutions.
The brief was to build a home for a firm that operates more like an ecosystem than a single entity — one that needed to read as a coherent, credible institution to the LP investors, potential portfolio companies, and wealth management clients who arrive at it with completely different questions and expectations.
What held it together was three words: Capital. Culture. Network. Sagard differentiates by deploying capital with an entrepreneurial culture and a global network. The site’s job was to make that distinction legible, fast, to everyone who arrived.

Strategy
The information architecture was a major challenge. A firm with five asset classes and many investment vehicles risks creating a sprawling directory — technically comprehensive but practically useless. Conversely, flattening everything under a single “Strategies” page loses the specificity important to sophisticated LPs or portfolio companies assessing Sagard’s private credit or healthcare lending.
The navigation was structured to hold both demands at once. Top-level categories (Venture Capital, Private Equity, Private Credit, Real Estate, Sagard Wealth) give visitors an immediate orientation to the asset class landscape. Each strategy then opens into its specific vehicles — Diagram, Portage Ventures, and Portage Capital Solutions under venture; Sagard MidCap, NewGen, PE Canada, PE Solutions, BEX Capital, and the Private Equity Strategies Fund under private equity. Visitors who know what they’re looking for can get there in two clicks. Visitors who don’t can orient from the top down.

User experience
The people-forward approach is a key UX decision for a firm whose differentiation is relational. Leadership profiles appear early because at Sagard’s market level, people are part of the product. The value proposition includes the network, made of people, which is clearly presented on the site.
Bilingual functionality — full English and French versions — was built in from the start, not retrofitted. As a Montreal-founded firm with deep roots in Quebec’s business community and a significant European investor base, the French-language experience is a signal of where Sagard came from and who it’s built for.

Outcome
The site gives Sagard’s scale and complexity a structure that works — one coherent identity across five asset classes, fifteen investment vehicles, and a global office network, in two languages, designed to serve three distinct audiences without fragmenting into any of them.
The underlying architecture was built to grow alongside a firm that has consistently outpaced its own projections. Sagard launched in 2016. By the time the site was designed in 2024, it had reached $46B AUM and 540+ professionals. The navigation and content model were designed with continued expansion in mind — new vehicles, new offices, new strategies can be added without requiring a structural rebuild.
