Utile Design
Website redesign for one of Boston’s leading architecture, planning, and urban design firms

Overview
Utile had spent a decade building a reputation as one of Boston’s most rigorous and wide-ranging design practices. Their work spans the full scale of the architecture environment: citywide housing policy, neighborhood master plans, civic buildings, interiors, and graphic design. When Utile refreshed their brand identity in-house in 2024, the moment to rebuild the site arrived naturally.
"For a layperson without web development or design experience, Temper And Forge was able to articulate the constraints of some of the things we were asking for. If we asked for some fields to look a certain way, they were able to explain and help us understand the constraints. There was a lot of engagement and education along the way. As a design firm, we really appreciated that."

Strategy
Utile’s clients — municipal governments, civic institutions, real estate developers — don’t arrive cold from a Google search. They arrive already knowing the firm. The site’s role is to validate that instinct and give them a reason to keep looking.
That distinction shaped every decision. We weren’t building a lead-generation machine. We were building a showcase — one designed to impress the kind of sophisticated audiences who respond to awards submissions, editorial press, and peer recommendations. The goal was to clear away everything in the way of the projects and let the work speak.
T&F developed three distinct design directions, each interpreting Utile’s refreshed brand identity into a different digital expression. Each direction started from the same style guide — the same typography, palette, and graphic sensibility that Utile’s in-house team had developed — but proposed a different logic for how that identity should live on screen.

Design
Utile’s practice is unusually wide. Architecture, urban planning, interiors, graphic design, sustainability consulting — these disciplines live and collaborate under one roof, but they each need to be findable for someone who arrives looking for just one of them. The navigation and information architecture were rebuilt to honor that range without making any single practice area feel subordinate.
The visual system was translated carefully from the brand refresh into WordPress. Typography and spacing were applied with a precision you’d expect from a firm that thinks carefully about the same things in every medium — and the team at Utile, as designers themselves, were attentive to every detail. “There was a lot of engagement and education along the way,” Allison Price noted. "As a design firm, we really appreciated that.”
Mobile performance, accessibility, and image optimization were built in from the start — meaningful investments for a portfolio defined by high-quality architectural photography that needs to render cleanly on any screen.

Outcome
The site launched in September 2025, nearly a year after kickoff. It delivered on the specific metrics Utile had set: more organic traffic arriving from searches tied to awards, press coverage, and project types; visitors spending more time on project pages; and a cleaner path from homepage to portfolio that didn’t require users to hunt.
The engagement didn’t end at launch. T&F provides ongoing on-call support — responding quickly to post-launch refinements and helping Utile maintain a site that can evolve as the firm continues to grow. For a practice that publishes regularly, wins awards consistently, and takes on work at the scale of statewide housing policy, that kind of responsive partnership has ongoing value.

A few of our favorite strategic outcomes.
